Temporary Migrants as Transnational Musicians

This project aims to examine the live music performance engagement of temporary migrants from the Filipino diaspora in Australia, which serves as a pilot study to uncover patterns and experiences of migrants in the live music sector.​​

In the first stage of the project, we are conducting a survey involving the Filipino community to determine the Filipino diaspora’s engagement as live music audiences, performers or intermediaries, including the way they travel, purchase tickets, spend during events, and feelings of connection with the event or artists. Results of the surveys will generate insights into the access, inclusion, support, and participation of Filipino temporary migrants in live music in Australia, with the aim of informing the design and development of more equitable policies and creative environments.

In the second stage of the project, we are conducting interviews to determine the Filipino diaspora’s experiences in live music performance, including the way they demonstrate their participation in live music industries in regional Australia and in what ways music facilitates the creation, maintenance and negotiation of their creative identities, representation, and belonging. Results of the interview will generate insights into the access, inclusion, support, and participation of Filipino temporary migrants in live music in Australia, with the aim of informing the design and development of more equitable policies and creative environments.
